Run Embedded Glassfish V3 on Nokia N810

Saturday, January 2, 2010

In 2008, I wrote an article on programming the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet (see http://www.ddj.com/java/208801979). It's a cool device that runs Linux, and has a Java VM available. My colleague and good friend, Jim Connors, recently wrote about how he got Glassfish v3 to run, embedded within a Java application, on the same device - within its 128MB RAM limit! To read about how he did this, see http://blogs.sun.com/jtc/entry/glassfish_on_a_handheld

While the usefulness of this particular configuration may be limited, it illustrates how Glassfish and its new modularity, along with its ability to be embedded within an application, can be used in situations that weren't suitable in the past. This opens the possibility of embedding interactive Web applications into kiosks, security systems, game systems, you name it! Add wireless Internet connectivity to the device and you have an embedded Enterprise Java application that can communicate and interact with the world - while remaining mobile itself. There are lots of possibilities here, based on open Web standards, that extend far beyond simply installing a standalone application on a cell phone or other smart device.

Happy coding!
